We headed out from Progreso today with clear skies and calm seas. As soon as we reached the tarpon grounds, fish were rolling everywhere. About 40 minutes in, after two or three missed shots, Rafa connected with a solid fish. It put up a spirited fight before he managed to bring it to the boat — check the photo for size

We kept prowling the area, scanning for more rollers. After some searching, we spotted a small pod and dropped a back cast right into the zone. The bigger fish of the bunch inhaled our fly. The fight was intense, with several long, powerful runs deep into the backing. We were close to the flats, so we tried to work the fish over there to get off the boat and land it in the water. It was the only real option — there was no way that fish was coming aboard. Unfortunately, it shook free just before we reached the shallows.

We had a few more shots throughout the day, but no more takers. Even so, the action and the sight of big tarpon rolling on the surface made for an unforgettable day on the water here in Progreso.
